A NOT so Happy Run – Brooks Run Happy 2011 a failure almost!

It’s Sunday morning of May 22, 2011 I was still asleep when Bebe (a friend, co-runner, and former colleague from TrendLabs) called me 4am in the morning asking where I am but this sleepy head is enjoying the last-minute of sleep. This call makes me wake up and quickly grab my new pair of running shoes from a friend, wear my neon green Brooks singlet attached my race bib number 832 for kilometer run in front and bib shout out “Pain is Weakness, Leaving the Body” advertising https://kalongkong.wordpress.com at the back. All is set for me and it’s time me to test my new pair of shoes and excited to join Brooks Run Happy 2011. I took a cab to meet my fellow runners near the company building because one of them is generous enough to offer a ride going to the race venue. Bebe, Johnley and Sir John was already at the meet up place so we straightly at the venue. After parking, we saw that there’s quite a few runners preparing not unlike race events that RunRio organizes that runners, spectator, committee are everywhere.

Runners for 15K are all lined up at the race chute. Assembly Time for the race is 4:00 am – 5:20 am. 5:30 am should be the gun start of 15K, 5:40 am for 10Km, 5:50 am for 5K, 6:00 am for 3K but there is a technical problem on the official time at least that’s what I thought or what I heard. 20 minutes passed the race isn’t started yet so I hear runners yelling, booing and some of them shouting for count down 10, 9, 8, 7….. til zero but the race isn’t going to started yet. Somehow the hosts or emcee of the race was sensitive enough to notice it so they started the race. The race is on, after reaching Buendia-Edsa boundary where one of the u turn was set up, water station is not enough, no cups available, runners are the one to put water from the gallon it was not a convenient at all, secondly race tags are not sufficient, sun was already kissing runners skin. I enjoyed running over the flyover, most of runners are walking to cross it but I am continuously run as I acquired a technique I call it the high gear technique, think of riding a mountain bike where in you put your gear to high gear so that pedaling is easy. Oh yeah, it works for me.

I about the half of 15K run when I felt something is wrong on my feet. It’s the cushioning of the new pair shoes that for the first time I used was the problem, the fingertips of my feet was hurting, I should have had listen to the advises that I read from mags, blogs that I visited. I am at the point that I was going to take off my shoes and try barefoot running, by the way, I saw 2 or 3 barefoot runners on this event.  Lesson learned so the next time I will break in a new shoes first before running on the race event. Overall experience was good though as you can run most of the time due to limited runners on the road as I get used to run in wider audience. Hmmm, it’s amazing how RunRio achieve that big audience, whenever they organize a run runners flock their event. To finish the course, I had to run under a shade so I choose to run beside wall of a building or a barracks to run to or under a tree.

One of the amazing was one of the runner running with him is a physically impaired individual in a wheelchair, I  don’t know how they are relate to each other, if they are brothers, father & son or friends as I didn’t have a chance to ask them, I thought I can only see runners like this in YouTube. Watch how a father and son run together in Iron Man event it the US, they looked like it but without swim and bike just pure running. See video below to see what I am talking about haha:

Isn’t it awesome and very inspiring. Too bad I wasn’t able to took picture with them to document it.

There are times that I stopped running and started brisk walking as my heart rate bits so fast so I listened to my body and rest for a while until it was 2 kilometers til the finish. I started running again straight to the finish line during the last 1 and half kilometers. Guess what I met Jep (we both started the race with the same at the starting line) on the last 5oo meters and we race to the finish. Photo finish somebody captured that moment and I am still looking for that picture. It’s almost a not so happy run so for the enjoying I still had smile left in my heart. I got my first finishers medal made of blue lace, carved wood with Brooks Run logo with no date haha. Everybody gets their Brooks Run scarf except me and those who are still finishing their race, I got 2 bags of lot bags of Hygienix alcohol spray with papers, some got Magazines. I lined to Men’s Health boot to get a outdated copy of their magazine and then pause for a picture on the tarps and we go home.
