Press Release: Record-Breaking No. of Runners in Manila Leg

MANILA, July 23, 2012 – A sea of green will once again envelop the Seaside Boulevard of the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City, as students, athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike lace up their running shoes for the 36th National MILO Marathon Metro Manila qualifying leg. This Sunday, 38,000 runners, of which more than 2,000 runners registered for the 42-K track, are expected to join the race, marking the largest number of participants in a single race in the history of MILO Marathon.

According to Rio de la Cruz, Marathon Organizer Head and President, RunRio Inc., safety measures have been made to ensure the success and the safety of this year’s race. “We will provide medics, police and marshals along the route, and execute a well-organized event for the runners,” said de la Cruz. “We can achieve this by following a set of running event guidelines that will assure both Nestlé Philippines and runners that we are implementing quality races.” RunRio Inc. is the national race organizer of the 36th National MILO Marathon.

Celebrities are also joining in on the fun at the Metro Manila eliminations, including Magic 89.9’s ‘Boys Night Out’ radio jockeys Eric Virata (Slick Rick) and Samir Gogna (Sam YG), GMA Network talents Jan Marini Alano and Gerard Pizarras, Binibining Pilipinas-World 2008 Danielle Castaño, and celebrity heartthrob Troy Montero.

Winners from the Metro Manila elimination race will face-off with qualifying leg winners Hernanie Sore and former MILO Marathon Queen Cristabel Martes (Baguio elims), Wilson Maningkil and Lany Cardona (Dagupan elims), three-time former MILO Marathon King Eduardo Buenavista and Miscelle Gilbuena (Tarlac elims) and former MILO Marathon King Julius Sermona and Merdeliza Dizu (Angeles elims) at the 36th MILO Marathon National Finals on December 9.

MILO strives to give the Filipino youth a better future by promoting and actualizing its advocacy program, ‘Help Give Shoes’, which has reached 16,200 underprivileged school children nationwide. The program aims to distribute running shoes to students from ten schools in Metro Manila namely, San Rafael National High School, Ramon Magsaysay High School, Tibangan Elementary School, Gen. M. Hizon Elementary School, Pasay Science High School, Tatalon Elementary School, Carlos Albert High School, and Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School.

“MILO aims to realize the hopes and dreams of the Filipino youth by providing an avenue through which MILO Marathon participants can take action and help our less fortunate children,” said Andrew Neri, MILO Sports Executive. “This year, MILO will donate 10,000 pairs of shoes to students from all over the nation. That’s more than twice as much as MILO gave away in 2010.”

After the Metro Manila leg on July 29, the qualifying race will shift to Naga on August 19, San Pablo, Laguna on September 2, Lipa, Batangas on September 16, Puerto Princesa, Palawan on September 23, Tagbilaran on September 30, Cebu on October 7, Bacolod on October 14, Iloilo on October 28, General Santos on November 4, Davao on November 11, Butuan on November 18 and Cagayan de Oro on November 25.
